Mainly the North had abolsihed it, except for the Border States by that time. I believe it wasn't until 1850 that the Slave trade was done away with in Washington D.C.

Actually, the Constitutional Convention of 1787 passed a bill saying that in 20 years hence, the slave trade would become illegal in the U.S. So, in 1807, congress passed the law into the books. Alot of people don't know this (don't feel bad, I've done like loads of research:D), and assume that the slave trade was legal up untill the civil war. The one catch in the bill, though, was that the practice of selling and buying slaves was not affected or altered in any way. Therefore, all that remained was getting the slaves into the country, i.e., smuggling them in. What made congress ignore the issue for so long? Why did they consistently look the other way for so long?
They say that money makes the earth go 'round, and this proves it: Washington ignored the issue not only because of the already known agricultural need in the south for cheap labor, but also because of the economical need in the north for commercial revenue. If you don't see what I'm driving at, maybe you haven't heard this little known statistic: that 99% of all slaves were brought (smuggled), and sold into the country by Northern shipping companies. Now everything makes sense, doesn't it? Northern politicians, the ones in the best position to put a halt to this smuggling gambit, ignored it because they didn't want to go up against the Big Industry of the north. And they probably didn't want to go up against their most likely financial backers come election time, either.

in my point of view I think both sides had faults in the war.

No I didin't thats what I think, I would of still put that if you didin't say anything at all.

neither side was justified in doing things that were done during the war,
BUT the South was fully justified to seceed from the union, in accordance
with the very princibles that this country was founded on.

But, it wasn't constitutional. Nothing to stop it, but nothing to validate it.

The rights of the American people are not limited to what is writtin in the constitution. The same goes for the rights of the individual states. The fact of the matter is that the only purpose of the U.S. Constitution is to set clear bounderies on the FEDERAL government, limiting its powers. The only powers it maintains are those granted to it by the states themselves. And "Oppie", go eat some pie you yank. lol.

But people in the government now are trying to get more power than they should have.

The original idea was little goverment involvment. But, seeing how things went with the Whiskey Rebillion and such, They found it nessecary to increase power. Which is kind of a good thing. Keeps small companies and even bigger ones from really jacking thier prices.

I agree with you guys, but I'm not gonna debate over stuff that I don't entirely know for sure.

All I wanna say is with power comes responsability and when you get too much...It's really no good.
