A cheap imitation? The whole point was to create a similar republic, with the same ideals, but to protect the rights of the States in particular. It basically was the US constitution, if you hadn't figured that out, maybe in different language, but it guaranteed the same rights and powers of the government. It only made a slight, "revision" if you will. I thought that was obvious......

I've heard it said that the Declaration of Independence is a cheap imitation of the Magna Carta.... What would you say to that? In other words, you can always say that something wasn't completely original, but you can only judge it, in its entirety, by its inpact on history.

Come on IBG, Jefferson was not a traitor! He was a brilliant statesman, who helped our young country through difficult times. His works, however, actually back up the states' rights platform. Some of his most famous works, the Virginia Resolves and the Kentucky Resolves, helped promote the State right of nullification. In this instance, the issue at hand was the Alien and Sedition Acts, not the right of secession. However, the principle carries over, and makes for an excellent bit of evidence in the South's arguement.

What is everyones' opinion concerning Nullification? (this is on topic since it is about a fixture of the US constitution, which could have provided a loophole that would have possibly prevented the Civil War altogether, and the signing of the Confederate Constitution)
