The 300 Spartans

Yes, good movie, I own it. Something I don't think was explained, is that Leonidas was king of Sparta, which was a Greek city-state, just like Athens. While these two city-states were trying to rally Greece under one banner, King Leonidas decided to try to delay the Persian army at a small mountain pass called Thermopoly. However, their was a religious festival scheduled for that week, and it was against Spartan law to fight during the festival. Leonidas saw the great need, though, and decided to go with the only soldiers he could legally take with him, his personal bodygaurd, 300 men. Of course, these were the 300 best fighters in all of Sparta, which had the most powerful army in all of Greece. It was with these men that he held off the massive Persian host for three days. A famous quote by Leonidas:
"Go tell the Spartans, passerby,
That here, obedient to their laws, we lie."

Another quote by the Spartan King I love, is when told that the number of Persian arrows would block out the sun, Leonidas calmy replied "Then we will fight in the shade." What a guy!

I thought I called him King Leonidas. Ah, oh well. Actually, they have never been able to get an exact interpetation of what it says. I love ancient warfilms all the same.

I know, I'm a sucker for epics. Sorry, you did say King Leonidas, on the first page. I hadn't seen that. And yes, I've heard half-a-dozen interpretations of that quote, but that is by far the most predominant.

I liked the war scenes, especially during the Immortal attack and the Spartan attack on the end.

ya, I haven't seen that one either. Heard that it was mostly romance. However, the Battle of Actium looked good.

What are you talking about mom? Listen, Hood couldn't take that rocky hill at Gettysburg, and I doubt that the Texas Brigade could have taken it either. Hood was only good on the attack, and so was his brigade. And, a single battery stopped Hoods attack cold at Antietam, and most of the time, the battery had been overshooting because they couldn't see the rebels through the cornfield. So there.

yeah I know, but once in a while it's fun to side with other people.

Yes Stuart it was the group of 300 greek soldiers that held off an army of a million persians I believe? Not to sure about that number.

There you go. Yes, it was rumored to be an army of a million men, but historians estimate the number anywhere from 100,000 to a few hundred thousand at most.
