Nathan Bedford Forrest pushing back the yankees April 12, 1864, it's funny union maj. bradford wanted an hour to surrender but forrest only gave him 20 minnutes lol.

only 80 confederate casulities compared to about 570 union casulties, most were colored troops...this fight sparked alot of controversy.

Would you view the cause of this "massacre" (if it was a massacre) General Forrest?

I don't think he ordered it. But, then again, he didn't try to stop it either.

Under the circumstances, I think it would have become very easy for the confederates to get carried away, especially if the yankees didn't imediately choose to surrender. As to Forrest stopping the carnage, that's just not the kind of man he was.

Espically since some of the defenders were blacks. They hated blacks and gave no quarters to them. Just think of the Crater and you got their whole attitude to Black troops.

I don't think the Crater was a clear demonstration of the south's hate of blacks. It's just hard to miss at point-blank range.

"Take the white! Kill the N-----r!" Famous battle cry of the Battle of the Crater. They took prisoners up until Ferros (can't remember how it's spelled at the moment) black troops got into the fight then gave no quarters.

Hey, I did some reading to jog my memory last night, and the way Fort Pillow actually went follows thus: (lol)

Forrest invested the fort, and called on the Union commander to surrender immediately, or else he could not be held responsible for the consequences. The union commander asked for 1 hour to discuss this with his officers. Forrest saw steamboats coming up river and suspected that they carried yankee reinforcements, and so only gave the fort 20 minutes to decide. The yankee chose to fight, and so Forrest attacked and captured the fort within minutes. Little known or recognized in history is that Forrest actually was doing his very best to stop any "massacre" that was ensuing. The "massacre" was really just rebels chasing yankee soldiers who were trying to escape down to the docks behind the fort. There are, although, several accounts of confederates shooting negroes who were in the act of surrendering. But the main point is that Forrest did everything in his power to immediately end the fighting once the fort had been captured. It doesn't sound like something Forrest would do, but it's fact.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Try to shift blame from the rebs. Actually, that is quiet intresting. But, I don't see Forrest as the type of guy to stop any bloodletting.

It's a fact. Anyway, I got the info from Shelby Foote's civil war series, vol. II. I highly reccomend those books. If IBG had read them all, he wouldn't be so misguided lol.

Forrest was just another southern fanatic. lol. But, on a more serious note, he starts the KKK and kills black unmericfully, wemon, children.

dude, sorry to say this and I know it comes as a shock, but the KKK started out as a good thing, just like all vigalantees. I have never seen documented proof that the KKK did anything wrong in the days of its founding (and I mean the real KKK, not criminals who held up banks in its name). And I've never heard that Forrest ever massacred unarmed citizens. And some "fanatic" he was, he gave up and went home in Nov. of '64 I think, because he knew the war was over, especially in the west. Real fanatic, yep.
