| James Ewell Brown...one of the most famous faces of the confederacy.....he was one of..if not THE most successful cavalry commander in the civil war, he's a major reason the confederacy got as far as they did in the war. He WAS the eyes of the confederacy...and def one of my favorite commanders, west point grad 1854. Sgt. Kevin Whiting Drum Sgt. for the Excelsior Brigade Fife and Drum Corps. www.myspace.com/excelsiorbrigade | |

| The Confederates had ALOT of good Calvary generals. (though I believe Stuart to be the best) Hampton, Mosby, and Forrest. The Yankees were stuck with Sheridan and Kilpatrick whos' sucess relied somwhat on their on their total war tactics.... Thankfully as far as I know the Yankees dont have any atrocites to pin on Stuart. | |

| Well, he ordered the mayor at Cashtown (I believe it is Cashtown) to give him alot of money or he would burn the city to the ground. The only thing was was that he got word of the ANV getting into a pickle at Gettysburg and hurried away before he could get the ransome. | |

| Sorry, wrong year. It was 1862 while Stuart was circling the Yankee forces. http://www.explorepahistory.com/hmarker.php?markerId=689 This account tells about Stuart's raid as a whole. Cashtown was called Mercersburg back then, just to let you know. | |

| J.E.B. Stuart was a great cavalry commander, and a great military mind over-all. After Gen. Jackson was fatally wounded on the first day at Chancellorsville, Lee, to the surprise of everyone, put Stuart in command of that entire wing of the Confederate forces. Some say this was to bolster the soldier's morale after having Jackson taken from them. And he actually did such a good job while in command of Jackson's corps, many thought it was a shame to send him back to his old job as cavalry commander after the battle. That would have been interesting had he stayed.... But the two major blemishes on his record that will always haunt his legacy are the Battle at Brandy Station, and of course, arriving too late to help Lee during the Battle of Gettysburg. Some might say with good cause that Nathan B. Forrest was an even better cavalry officer... but that's another subject. Stuart will always be synonamous with the South, and their legendary cavalry. And rightfully so. | |

| They did have Early in Command I believe but he was taken out of action almost immediatly but a shell. Didn't seriously wound him, but, fazed him. Stuart was the next one that was able to command. | |

| That's right. The next officer in line I think was Rhodes, and Lee judged him as too young and inexperienced to take command of a corps. | |
