| It was the worst but one of his best moments to shine. Let me think, He orders the charge: showing he is still human and not the god he was made out to be. He loses the charge and instead of making up excuses about Longstreet, he says, "It is all my fault,": Thus showing him to be one of the most responsible men of the war. He then sends a letter of resignation to Richmond: showing him to be humble. | |

| Yep what he says I heard General Picket has never forgiven Lee because he lost his entire division in the process But such tactics would be used again in the following Wars | |

| Who is that loser anyway? Don't bother posting dude if you don't know any real English, cuz it's the lingo we use here. Anyway..... I don't know how many times I've had to defend Lee's decision on making Pickett's charge to people I've met who are all so quick to jump on the guy. Throughout the war, Lee was always outnumbered at LEAST 2 to 1. That calls for a little risk-taking in order to produce victories. When the risks payed off, they are called brilliant masterpieces. But when they don't, they're called the worst decisions of the war. Sound a little unfair? Ya, I think so. Besides, if you look at the situation, what was he going to do? He had already attacked both Union flanks; Meade was now heavily reinforcing these positions. That meant either throw everything left at the union center, or, give up and go home, without putting all of him men into the battle, something several union generals were sacked for doing. He was almost out supplies, ammo and shells, it would be unrealistic to try and manuever around Meade because of the differences in numbers, and to successful withdraw in the face of the enemy at this point would be asking for a miracle at best. You are correct, he always took full responsibility for the outcome, and Pickett did hold a grudge against him. This is my take on it anyway. Anyone who whishes to challenge my stance on it, just speak up, I'm always open to debate or new takes on it. | |
