| Since I am somewhat of a collector of Civil War movies, of course I own a copy of Wicked Spring. I have heard people complain of the sappy, speechless beginning (8 minutes of slow-mo and corny music), but it's one aspect I love about the movie.
What bothered me more about the film, was the fact that it did not convince me. The action is not below-par, but the lighting is: never was there a moment that these guys were unable to tell each other's political preference in such luminous environs. We have to see something, of course, but this was sadly unconvincing.
Despite this, however, it is a thoroughly entertaining film, which tries, once more, to illustrate the tragedy of the war: if not for the circumstances, these boys could be friends (of course, they would never have strayed so far from home, but ok).
Maybe, if you like this film, you should try to get a hold of "The Last Confederate" (or perhaps it's called "Striking the tent"). Although mistitled, I think, it is a nice independent movie from a clear Southern perspective (nicely avoiding any hint of slavery or cruelty, it speaks of the defense of "our way of life"). Nice detail: the lead actor is the great-grandson of the soldier he portrays. | |
