Quotes of Lincoln
Asked Of Abraham Lincoln...
"Why not let the South go in peace?"
Response Of Abraham Lincoln...
"I can't let them go. Who would pay for the government?"
“My paramount objective in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not to either save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could do it by freeing some of the slaves and leaving others alone I would also do that." - Lincoln to Horace Greeley of the NY Tribune August 22, 1862.
"I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races [applause]: that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will for ever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I, as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." -- Reply by Abraham Lincoln
"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right, which we hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government, may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize, and make their own, of so much territory as they inhabit." -- Abraham Lincoln
"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery." – Abraham Lincoln
"I am a little uneasy about the abolishment of slavery in this District (of Columbia)." - Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln said, "But for your race there could not be war... It is better for us both, therefore, to be separated".
"What I would most desire would be the separation of the white and black races." Abraham Lincoln
"The principle [of the Proclamation] is not that a human being cannot justly own another, but that he cannot own him unless he is loyal to the United States government."-Abraham Lincoln
Lee Quotes
“Governor, if I had foreseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; no, sir, not by me. Had I foreseen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in this right hand.” General Robert Edward Lee"
General Lee said to General Grant: "Grant, you didn't whip me, you just overpowered me, I surrender this day 8,000 men; I do not surrender them to you, I surrender on conditions; it shall not go down in history I surrendered the Northern Confederate Army of Virginia to you. It shall go down in history I surrendered on conditions; you have ten men to my one; my men, too, are barefooted and hungry. If Joseph E. Johnston could have gotten to me three days ago I would have cut my way through and gone back into the mountains of North Carolina and would have given you a happy time."
"I would have never surrendered the army if I had known how the South would have been treated." -- General Robert E. Lee
"We could have pursued no other course without dishonor. And sad as the results have been, if it had all to be done again, we should be compelled to act in precisely the same manner." --- Robert E. Lee
"When you eliminate the black Confederate soldier, you've eliminated the history of the South." quoted from General Robert E. Lee, in 1864.
"Our country demands all our strength, all our energies. To resist the powerful combination now forming against us will require every man at his place. If victorious, we will have everything to hope for in the future. If defeated, nothing will be left for us to live for." --- Robert E. Lee
Other Confederate Generals’ quotes
"Surrender means that the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the War; will be impressed by all the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision." -- General Pat Cleburne
"I am with the South in life or in death, in victory or in defeat...... I believe the North is about to wage a brutal and unholy war on a people who have done them no wrong, in violation of the Constitution and the fundamental principles of government. They no longer acknowledge that all government derives its validity from the consent of the governed. They are about to invade our peaceful homes, destroy our property, and inaugurate a servile insurrection, murder our men and dishonor our women. We propose no invasion of the North, no attack on them, and only ask to be left alone."
~~Major General Patrick Cleburne C.S.A.
"You have no right to ask, or expect that she will at once profess unbounded love to that Union from which for four years she tried to escape at the cost of her best blood and all her treasure. Nor can you believe her to be so unutterably hypocritical, so base, as to declare that the flag of the Union has already surpassed in her heart the place which has so long been sacred to the 'Southern Cross.' "
--- General Wade Hampton
General Jubal Early-- The Army of Northern Virginia was never defeated. It merely wore itself out whipping the enemy.
General Wade Hampton-- If we were wrong in our contest, then the Declaration of Independence of 1776 was a grave mistake and the revolution to which it led was a crime. If Washington was a patriot; Lee cannot have been a rebel.
General J E B Stuart-- I would rather be a private in Virginia's army than a general in any army that was going to coerce her.
Yankee Generals’ Quotes
"There is a class of people (in the South), men, women and children, who must be killed or banished before you can hope for peace and order." -- General William T. Sherman
"Next year their lands will be taken, for in war we can take them, and rightfully too, and another year they may beg in vain for their lives. A people who will persevere in war beyond a certain limit ought to know the consequences. Many many people, with less pertinacity than the South, have been wiped out of national existence. To those who submit to the rightful law and authority, all gentleness and forbearance; but to the petulant and persistent secessionist, why, death is mercy, and the quicker he or she is disposed of the better." -- General William T. Sherman
"I begin to regard the death and mangling of a couple of thousand men as a small affair, a kind of morning dash." -- General William T. Sherman
"If I thought this war was to abolish slavery, I would resign my commission, and offer my sword to the other side." --- General Ulysses S. Grant
Quotes proving Black Confederates
One black man said to a commanding General of the State Militia, "our fathers were brought here as slaves because they were captured in war, and in hand to hand fights, too. Pardon me, General, but the only cowardly blood we have got in our veins is the white blood. "
Forrest said of the black men who served with him:
...these boys stayed with me...and better Confederates did not live.
Black Confederate Nim Wilkes once said:
“I was in every battle General Forrest fought after leaving Columbia...I was mustered out at Gainesville”
A number of free blacks sent a letter to the editor of the Daily Delta expressing their support for their native state. The letter stated :
... the free men of colored population (native)...love their home, their property, their own slaves, and they are dearly attached to their native land, and they recognize no other country than Louisiana, and care for no other than Louisiana, and they are ready to shed their blood for her defense. They have no sympathy for Abolitionism; no love for the North, but they have plently for Louisiana; and let the hour come, and they will be worthy sons of Louisiana. They will fight for her in 1861 as they fought in 1814 - 15....
"There are at present many Coloured men in the Confederate Army doing duty not only as cooks, servants and labourers, but real soldiers, having muskets on their shoulders, and bullets in their pockets." -- Frederick Douglas
Other Quotes
"But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security." -- Declaration Of Independence
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence." -- Article 4 - Section 4 : United States Constitution"
All we ask is to be left alone." -- President Jefferson Davis, CSA
"A question settled by violence, or in disregard of law, must remain unsettled forever." -- President Jefferson Davis
"Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage" -- Micah 2:2
"Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy forefathers have set." -- Proverbs 22:28
“Swords are mighty but Principles laugh at Swords. Overwhelming force may crush Truth to the earth, but crushed or not Truth is still the Truth.” John S. Tilly

| I read them all. Awesome. Thank you so much, General Lee, for posting those. I think I might print them and frame them on my wall lol (seriousely). It really rescribes the true nature of the conflict. Really, what does a yankee have to say after reading that? | |

| I know what you mean. But I don't think it's just that. I think that these quotes just show in such a blaring light what we don't hear; I can site the Gen. Patrick R. Claibourne quote for this one, that the history of events will be written by the victors. And was Lincoln racist or what? You would think he's the president of the KKK, not the author of emancipation. (Anybody read "The Bell Curve"?) And some union man Grant was lol. | |

| I've read quite a few of these before. I think we have all known the whole time that freeing the slaves was not Pres. Lincoln's attempt. But to keep the nation as a whole. But I am glad that the slaves did get to be freed. | |

| Remarks on the ones about the blacks serving the rebs. I already knew they were serving the South. At Saylor's Creek, quiet a few Union troopers were suprised when they captured blacks from several Confed regiments. | |
