Here's an army worth talking about.

Oh yes. This army was legendary in its own right in many ways... The one thing it lacked was a legendary leader with the full support and backing of President Davis. Johnston was definitely an able general, but he never enjoyed the freedom that Lee did, a freedom that was gained through the faith of the government. Hood was also an able general, but he definitely wasn't the same man who had led the Texas Brigade into the Wheatfield at Antietam. The last days of this army make a sad and tragic story, but its accomplishments during the war were great, and the Army of the Tennessee's place in the history of the Confederacy is one of honor.

I would consider it the Confederate version of the Army of the Potomac. Those boys deserved a better fate then they got. Incompetant leaders led brave men. Only Joe Johnston was a good leader. Bragg was ok, but to slow. Hood was too aggressive at the wrong time.

The Army of Tennessee--not The Tennessee, that was a Yankee Army--never had the leadership it deserved.
I believe Sydney Johnson would have learned from his mistakes, but Bragg was bad news, Hood was worse, and J. Johnson was too cautious. And, IMHO, Beauregard would not have done much if he had stayed.

They, and the south, needed another Lee to command and and to get the other generals to work together.

Sorry about the typo. Joe Johnston was going to attack at Peachtree Creek, but got sacked before he got the chance, which he knew was coming. He told Hood of his plan, and Hood went right at it, bungling up the whole thing with ill-timing.

Unfortunately, Joe forgot to tell the commander in chief his plans--that's what got him sacked. Had Davis known about the attack, he probably would have kept Johnson despite Hood's manuvering to replace Old Joe.
